Here's a simple exercise that can help you discern your calling |

I
learned this formulation for discerning your calling from the excellent Michael Dowd. I love his
evolutionary spirituality work, and the simple accountability for what
he's doing. Check out his blog, or his book, Thank God for Evolution.
The purpose of this exercise is to help you discern your calling. This is a shortened and adapted version . . . Make three columns on a sheet of paper. In the left or right column make a list of things that inspire you, touch you, make you shout yes, move you to deep tears. What you love! Take time and feel into that as much as you want. Put down the real things. On the opposite side, the right or left, make a list of what "the world" needs. What would make a real difference? What's crying out for redress and help? (No need to worry about being local right now unless that comes up; you can do that step later.) In the middle make connections between what you love and what the world needs. You could hang out with that for a few days . . . think on it, dream on it. Draw arrows between things maybe. Hook yourself up to what wants you. If something comes, let it take body and heart for you. Get into it a bit. Pretend you're a kid in a kids's play playing that role maybe (a great way to try on new things). Imagine what that would look like in a relocalizing world and see what's there. That's it. This is a simple exercise that can take you a long way. Lots of simple exercises can work but the transformation comes from taking what comes seriously, from being earnest about making the change you want. As Laura Huxley used to say, "It works, if you do." Don't worry about making money from what comes. Just start to give it your energy and see what happens. So much the better if you can share with someone else what's coming up for you and how you're doing with it. Keep what's in moving out going 'round. Back to Serious Play |
