A stupidly simple way of getting unstuck

One technique that's connected to meditation that I use and like is Latihan (Michael Dowd playfully calls it "speaking in tongues".)

You can try it anytime when you're feeling stuck. I try and use it soon as I notice I'm getting stuck on something. Just noticing and moving quickly off the point when you notice yourself digging yourself in is helpful, or can be. This little manouevere amplifies that and makes it easier and explicit.

It's simply speaking nonsense syllables out loud or silently as if "talking," paying some attention to the utterance as you do. In short, happily babbling for a bit. I find this deceptively simple little thing great for getting my mind out of a rut and into the moment; I seem to find a little groove and move on, noticing the shift to . . . me, just there babbling :-)

I use this when something's got me stuck or stymied, sometimes quietly when I wake up early. You can also try it as part of your meditating. It provides some of what a mantra does, without any hocus pocus.  In this case you might alternate between the Latihan, and just sitting there, noticing what's there. All good practice.
