Start a skills exchange column in your local community paper |

Continuing the discussion . . . This idea worked for me and opened lots of doors to the people in my community. It raised my profile, that of the ideas I value, and of course, that of the people I interviewed. And it was good for the paper, I think. Everyone won! An important element for me - it may not be for you - is that the
interviewees agree to share their skill, or demonstrate it, with one or more people at a
mini-workshop in three or four weeks time. Each subsequent column I
mention the upcoming workshops again so it's ideal if there's some time. We have a great help where I live in having very inexpensive rental space at a community hall. This makes it easy for mini-workshops to be held there. Some people don't want strangers coming to their home. If you can get access to a place that's cheap or free, that's good. And perhaps you donj't need this part. The benefit of it is that it brings local people face to face. You get their email addresses and can invite them later to you mailing list for more good stuff. (You are on Radical Relocalization's mailing list aren't you? :-)) .The writing itself is simple and conversational, and mine are only 500 words or so. Not a lot of work It's that simple. Workshops - we call the
mini-workshops - could involve any aspect of gardening, canning and
preserving, making cheese, fixing
or building things, alternative energy, eating cheap vegetarian,
raising a few chickens, tole painting, right on up to work bees to
build small houses. . Or they have specialized
knowledge that they can share, your local building inspector for
example. This idea can also open the door to more local writing on aspects of relocalization. It'll help you meet like minded local people, the basis of a core groups perhaps. (And god knows what will come out of that!) Or it could lead to a community radio show?Careful: once you open this door, the whole world could pretty much walk in! If you're considering this or any other of these ideas please join the mailing list at the top of the page. You'll hear ideas from others and be connected to what they're doing.
