Radical Relocalization

Transition Towns are an initiative "to equip communities for the dual challenges of climate change and peak oil".

Ottawa, west of where I live, is an official "Transition Town", and I'm a member of this exciting initiative.

Here's how Wikipedia defines TT: "Transition Towns (also known as Transition network or Transition Movement) is a movement that was created by Louise Rooney and popularized by Rob Hopkins. It was founded in Kinsale, Ireland and was then spread to Totnes, England by environmentalist Rob Hopkins during 2005 and 2006. The aim of the project is to equip communities for the dual challenges of climate change and peak oil. The movement currently has member communities in a number of countries worldwide."

And it's growing fast. Here's a film made about the movement that shows, from the inside, how it sees itself around the end of 2009, early 2010. Like the movement itself, has much to commend it.

Here's the film:

I also enjoy and recommend the Transition Culture blog, run by Rob Hopkins, the visible face of the movement. You can buy the movie and various written material on the Transition plan from them. I admire how they've started a conversation around energy descent.

My question about Transition Towns is this: Is there a real tendency for TTto avoid the hard issues and problems to promote a more sellable no pain future. (Of course there are many who feel the TTers are too extreme!) Despite the fact that there's no simple answer to this, and maybe because there's not, the questions are worth asking. From my limited experience with the movement I'm unsure how able it is to deal well with criticism and challenge - difficulties that will arise in force when the system is not giving us such vast support.

I'm looking forward to exploring many different perspectives on how the Transition Town is doing, its radicalness, its shadow, its strengths, from inside and out, by speaking to insiders and outsiders and sharing their experience with you.
